Agri-PV: let's grow food and solar power together!

With agrivoltaics, we keep farming as the main use of farmland and add solar PV as a secondary way of using the land.

Agri-PV installations: One piece of land, double the benefits

Agri-PV is a technology that allows the land to perform two crucial activities simultaneously: the production of food and the generation of energy. By bringing these two worlds together, we can leverage techno-ecological synergies.

Agri-PV offers several key benefits:

  • Protect crops and soil: less wind, less sun, less heat stress.

  • Animal welfare is increased by lowering the temperature and protecting them from strong weather.

  • Increasing land use efficiency protects farmers' main role: food, feed, fiber and fuel production.

  • Income increases and diversification for the farmer.

We focus on two technological Agri-PV configurations: Inter-row and elevated systems.

Inter-row Agri-PV

Crops grow between the rows of modules, which are placed at a distance that leaves sufficient space for machinery to pass through.

This solution is suitable for low-growing crops, like wheat or legumes, and uses both high-performance double-sided modules (installed on single-axis trackers) and modules installed on fixed structures.

Elevated Agri-PV

Solar panels can be used over crops, offering shade and protection from extreme weather, as well as generating solar power.

These elevated Agri-PV solutions allow agricultural activities like livestock management or fruit cultivation beneath the solar panels.

BayWa r.e. has successfully implemented solar PV projects involving livestock such as dairy cows, sheep, and chickens. We also lead the way in cultivating berries, pome and stone fruits in so-called Fruit-PV projects.
